Many people ask me: What is a heat-pump?  Does it cool my home as well as an air conditioner?

Another common question is: Are heat-pumps a new thing?  They aren’t, that technology has been around for at least 40 years now.

A heat-pump is simply an air conditioner that not only cools your home as well as any air conditioner, but it also helps to heat it.  Think of it this way: your air conditioner sits there for 6-8 months doing nothing.  It’s just waiting for that warm day when you go tot he thermostat and turn it to “cool”.  Wouldn’t it make more sense to install a unit that not only cools, but can heat as well?  Rather than sitting idle for the better part of the year,  a heat-pump would only sit idle for maybe a month.

Some other reasons to choose a heat-pump over a traditional air conditioner:

1. A heat-pump has variable capacity.  That means during those cooler “warm” days when a standard A/C really can’t run for very long before turning off, your heat-pump can decrease its capacity, running longer and removing more humidity.

2. The modern heat-pumps are much more quiet than an air conditioner.  Is the noise from your outdoor unit keeping you from enjoying your deck or patio?   I’ve installed many more heat-pumps in the last few years than air conditioners, at a rate of 10 to 1.  Every one of my customers that chose the heat-pump are astonished at how quiet they run.

Ductless heat-pumps

Have an area of your home that just can’t quite get to the temperature you want it to be without making the rest of your home uncomfortable?  Maybe you have window air conditioners and are tired of taking them in and out every year and having to talk louder or turn the TV up when they’re running.  You should consider a ductless system.

Ductless heat-pumps (also known as mini-splits) are CRAZY efficient and quiet.  I even have customers that have them in their garages and sheds to not only heat and cool, but also to dehumidify.
